Always stop and look both ways for 705-ton apartment buildings before proceeding through the intersection.
The Murillo building moved 3.5 blocks through downtown Des Moines over a period of about 8 hours, in order to make room for the new Wellmark Blue Cross & Blue Shield headquarters on Grand Ave. 192 wheels drove along at a snails pace, climbing over curbs, Volkswagens, small children, and whatever else got in their way.
Apparently, this will be the biggest structure moved in the US this year. There was even a camera crew from the Discovery channel filming the process and taking interviews. Unfortunately, the 17 days it took the crew to get this building ready to move wasn't long enough for them to dig a simple hole in the ground at the new location. So the building is now double-parked on High Street, awaiting final excavation of its new home.
