Mmmmm... that paint sure looks tasty!
The Kingsway Cathedral served its congregation from 1901 - 2003, until it was deemed structurally unsafe in 2003 as a result of damages caused by vibrations from nearby road construction. The courts dismissed Kingsway's suit against the DOT. Restoration costs were estimated at $3.9 million on the $580,000 building.
The cathedral is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing resource in the Sherman Hill Historic District. Some kind of a restoration project has been going on since at least last fall, but it doesn't seem like much is really being accomplished. The City Council and Des Moines Historic Preservation Commission have declined to allow the building to be demolished.
