Last week, we were thinking green with the compact fluorescent bulb. But now we're back to incandescents with this prime 40 watt appliance specimen.
Edison wasn't really the inventor of the light bulb. He was really just the one who perfected it and made it practical for everyday use. Humphry Davy created the first incandescent light over 75 years prior, in 1802.
Most of the input energy to the incandescent bulb is lost as heat (about 98%!), making them much less efficient than more modern alternatives. But there are still many applications that cannot be replaced with compact fluorescents, LED's or halogens.
