This is a closeup of a beam (technically, an emergent pattern in ionized gas) from inside a lamp that works on the same principle as those plasma balls, except this is a tall corkscrew-like lamp instead of a sphere. You can see the full plasma lamp in this photo.

The plasma lamp was invented in 1894 by Nikola Tesla after his experimentation with high frequency currents in an evacuated glass tube for the purpose of studying high voltage phenomena. Tesla called this invention an Inert Gas Discharge Tube. The popular product sold today was invented by artist Bill Parker in 1970, while an undergraduate student at MIT.
