It would appear summer is finally actually here, with a couple of 90°+ days and that lovely Iowa humidity. Must. Resist. Turning. On. AC. Our house stays surprisingly cool in the summer (not really sure why, but I'm not gona complain), so we can usually get by without running the power hungry central air.
The first recorded mechanical fan was the punkah fan used in the Middle East in the early 1800s. It had a canvas covered frame that was suspended from the ceiling. Servants, known as punkah wallahs, pulled a rope connected to the frame to move the fan back and forth.
